How do I know when the school is closed unexpectedly?
Announcements will be made on the following AM radio station - WIND (1010), and the following TV stations: WNBC (Ch. 4), WABC (Ch.7), WNYW (Ch. 5), News12 NJ, and CNN (Ch.35 in Maplewood, FIOS Ch. 22 in Maplewood and Ch. 19 in South Orange). A message will be posted on the district webpage

973.761.5801.  It is crucial you call the After School Program, (ASP), if your child will not be there. If your child is expected but does not show up, protocol will be followed to locate your child.

Snack purchases are not offered during the initial weeks of school. Shortly thereafter snacks will be offered periodically.

When will I learn the name of my child's teacher?
            
You will receive your child's teacher assignment by mail. The letters are typically sent during the week before Labor Day weekend. The school will not release teacher assignments before the letters are mailed out.

How do I find out what bus my child will take to Marshall?
Children who will be bused to Marshall will receive their bus assignment along with a Transportation Safety Rules & Guidelines pamphlet in the mail the middle of August. Your child should carry the bus pass in their backpack at all times. Make sure your child knows the "color" of the bus route listed on the Bus Pass. School staff will dismiss students by bus color and escort them to the appropriate bus. A parent/guardian must get their child off the bus at the assigned bus stop (listed on the bus pass). All transportation questions can be directed to the Transportation Department at 973.378.9617.

Where do I drop my child off at Marshall if (s)he is not bused to school?
All classes line up on the blacktop behind Marshall School. There are numbers painted on the blacktop that correspond with each class. Your child's line number and location is provided in the teacher assignment letter. Please DO NOT arrive before 8:35am; children will be met by their teacher and escorted into the building at 8:45am. If you wish to watch him/her go into the building, you may park on nearby streets, but NOT on Marshall Court or University Court.  Also, please note that the parking lots in the front and rear of the building are for staff ONLY.

If you wish to go into the building, you may park on nearby streets but NOT on Marshall Court or Univeristy Court. Also, please note that the parking lots in the front and rear of the building are for staff ONLY. All visitors must enter through the front doors ONLY.
 
Where do I pick up my child after school at Marshall?
Students who do not take the bus should be picked up behind Marshall School on the blacktop. Your child will be dismissed to an authorized adult at the appropriate class line number by their teacher.

The school respectfully asks that you not walk your child to class if he/she is late. 
           
What can Marshall students do at recess?
Students wearing appropriate footwear may play on the playground.  Children may also read in the Quiet Reading Area outside of The Teaching Garden or use the blacktop to play four-square or draw with chalk. 
            
What are the Specials at Marshall and how often/ how long are they?
The Specials at Marshall include library for 30 minutes a week; computers for 30 minutes a week; art for 50 minutes a week; music for 50 minutes a week; and physical education for 100 minutes a week (2 x 50 minute sessions).

The main entrance is on the side off of Virginia Road and not the front entrance off of Ridgewood Road. This is where the main office is located and where bused students enter the school.

Please use Maryland Road or Brookside Road NOT Virginia Road, this is used for buses and is too dangerous to have kids getting dropped off.

Students go to the auditorium and sit by class in the teacher designated rows. Pre-K students will go directly to their classroom.

Which door should students use in the morning to enter Jefferson?
All doors around the school are open in the morning. The main entrance, off of Virginia Road, is where bused students enter the building.
           
What is California lunch at Jefferson?
The whole lunch period, lunch & recess, can be spent outdoors on nice days. You can eat and play outside.
    
What can Jefferson students do at recess?
Students can jump rope, walk the walking path or play 4-square, kickball or on the playground equipment.

What is detention at Jefferson?
On occasion students are asked to stay inside for recess or lunch as a consequence of not following a class or school rule.

What are the Specials at Jefferson and how often/ how long are they?
Spanish, library, music, and art are all 1 time a week ranging from 45 to 60 minutes. Physical education is 2 times a week. Instrumental music is offered to 5th graders. Chorus is offered to 4th graders and playing recorders starts in 3rd grade. During library students also work in the computer lab.

Who are the kids that walk around Jefferson with crossing guard like things on?
They are called Safety Patrol. They help open the doors and greet students in the morning as well as keep things moving. Most students on Safety Patrol are 5th graders along with a few 4th graders.

Who do I call to register my child for school?
Please call the District office right away, the phone number is 973.762.5600. You will need to go to the office (525 Academy Street, Maplewood, next to the high school) and show proof of residency (mortgage, utility bill, etc.), your child's birth certificate as well as any documentation from your previous school.

When will someone be back in the school office?
The Marshall and Jefferson offices are typically open the week before school starts. You can try calling the particular school's main number. Marshall School - 973.378.7698 and Jefferson School - 973.378.7696.
             
How do I get a tour of the school(s)?
Please call the school's main number - Marshall School - 973.378.7698 and Jefferson School - 973.378.7696.

What should I do if I have not received my child's teacher assignment?
If you need to confirm that your child is registered and/or receive your child's teacher assignment, please go directly to the main office  before the first day of school.
 
If you arrive on the first day and do not have your teacher assignment, there iwll be PTA volunteers and school staff available to provide you with this information. Once you receive the teacher assignment letter, your child can line up behind Marshall School on the blacktop - at the line number location specified in the teacher letter.
 
At Jefferson School, use the side door off of Virginia Road, the main office is to your right. Please sign in and let the secretary know why you are there. Once you receive the teacher assignment letter, your child can proceed to the auditorium (down the hall from the office on the left) and sit with his class in the teacher designated rows - as specified in the teacher letter.

Where should I go on the first day of school?
At Marshall School,all classes line up on the blacktop behind the school. There are numbers painted on the blacktop that correspond with each class. At Jefferson School, all students go to the auditorium (use the Virginia Road side door, down the hall from the office on the left) and sit with their class in the teacher designated rows - as specified and shown in the teacher letter.
           
If your child is bused, please accompany your child to their designated bus stop (as per the bus pass you should have received mid-August from the Transportation Department - 973.378.9617), 10 minutes early.
           
Both Marshall and Jefferson PTAs host a First Day Coffee, meet other parents and sign up to volunteer and help with any number of PTA sponsored activities.

Where will my child exit when school lets out?
At Marshall School, students who do not take the bus will exit at the rear of the building on the blacktop. Your child will be dismissed to an authorized adult at the appropriate line number by their teacher.
           
At Jefferson School, students who do not take the bus can exit from multiple doors. It is best to setup a pre-determined meeting spot.

Help!! My child has forgotten his/her lunch!
If you are able to drop off your child's lunch at the school office before their scheduled lunch time, please do so. (Refer to "What time is my child's lunch..." under the appropriate school.) If you are not able to drop off lunch and they do not have any money in their lunch account, the lunch aides are prepared to give your child food, such as packaged granola bar or  crackers, fruit & crudites, bread and a beverage.
            
Help!! My child is on medication and needs to take it during the day!
Please DO NOT send your child to school with medication. All medication MUST be given to the school Nurse in its original container with explicit instructions on how and when to administer. Note: If your child suffers from a chronic condition such as asthma, diabetes, allergies, etc., please contact the school Nurse as soon as possible to discuss treatment plans for your child.
  
Help!! My child got sick at school and I'm at work!
In the event your child is sick during the school day, your child may rest in the Nurse's office until either the parent/guardian or your emergency contact is able to pick him up. Please make every effort to make sure your emergency contact is up to date.
           
Help!! My child is running a fever! When can my child return to school?
Your child must be kept home until they are fever free for a minimum of 24 hours.
    
Help!! My child is late for school!
If your child is late for school, people take them to go directly to the office to get a late pass. If you know your child is going to be late, please leave a message on the school's main number.

Help!! My child lost their lunchbox!
At Marshall, all Lost & Found items are located at the entrance to the cafetorium. At Jefferson, Lost & Found items are located in the art room hallway near the gym. ***Please look for your lost items as soon as possible. The lost items will be donated to a local charity:
  • after parent conferences in November
  • during December break
  • during February break
  • during April break, and
  • at the end of the school year
Help!! My child needs before and/or after school care!
The South Mountain YMCA runs the Before School Program. The Program Center phone number is 973.762.4145 and the Childcare Center's phone number is 973.762.0860. They are located at 13 Jefferson Ave. Maplewood. For more information about South Mountain YMCA, you can go to www.smountainymca.org.
 
The After School Program (ASP) is run by the Township of Maplewood Dept. of Recreation. Their phone number is 973.762.0183 and their hours are generally Mon-Fri 9am-4pm. The ASP is run on site at both Marshall and Jefferson.
 
The PTA is not affiliated with either of these programs.

You must obtain your child's student ID number (PIN #) by calling Food Services at 973.762.5600 ext. 1002

To set up your EZ account: complete the EZ Lunch Account Deposit Form (a copy is included with the letter you should have received in August from Food Services or on the bottom of all lunch menus). Enclose a check in the appropriate amount. Make check or money order payable to "SOMBOE Cafeteria Fund". Submit the deposit form in the following ways: Bring in person to Columbia High School Cafeteria, 17 Parker Ave. Maplewood or mail to the address with "Attention: Food Services Department". Or send with your child to school. Mark the envelope "Lunch Program" with your child's name and teacher. No Cash!
           
Make a prepayment into your student's account using a credit card or debit card at www.mealpayplus.com, or calling 866.734.4694 (fee for service). You will need your child's PIN # which is located on the letter.
           
You can check your EZ Lunch Balance by calling 973.762.5600 ext. 1002 or at no cost at www.mealpayplus.com.

Alternatively, you can complete the EZ Lunch Account Deposit Form (a copy is included iwth the letter you should have received in August from Food Services or on the bottom of all lunch menus). Help!! What are the 2 types of EZ Lunch Accounts?
The 2 types of accounts are General Account and Lunch Only Account. The General Account allows students to buy any item offered in the school cafeteria. Money in this account can be used to buy hot lunch, daily alternates, milk, extra slice of pizza, nutritious snacks or juice items. Lunch Only Account is intended for parents who want to limit their child's purchases to meals only. No snacks or additional items may be purchased from this account.

Help!! My child has a food allergy!
Please inform Pomptonian Dining Services of any known allergies or dietary restrictions. A medical note must be provided by your physican; this may be faxed to their offices at 973.763.5774. Restrictions and allergies are posted in their computer system for staff access.
           
Help!! My child attends the school's After School Program, is it available on a 4-hour day?
Yes, the school's After School Program (ASP) will run until the normal time. We are not sure what other programs (i.e. YMCA) do on 4-hour days, so please check with them to verify
